Dumping Unwanted Items

A guide to assist tenants with the process of dumping unwanted furniture or bulky items.

Overview

As you move-in or out, you may find yourself needing to get rid of larger items or furniture that you no longer need. Most Cities or Townships will not pick up any trash or large items left outside of the bins, and the lids must be able to close properly. Please ensure you follow the proper process when disposing of bulky items, to avoid tickets or fees. Please find our guide on Trash & Recycling for more information.

Reuse and Bulky Item Disposal

Bulky waste includes items that cannot fit into your general household trash bin such as furniture, carpet, and appliances.

Curbside Pick-up Options

Some cities and townships in Washtenaw County have a bulky item pick-up option included in their curbside trash service. Accepted items and number of items varies. Some may have additional fees.

Recycle Ann Arbor

Recycle Ann Arbor provides a local Drop-off Station that is open to the public located on Ann Arbor’s south side.  For a fee you can dump unwanted furniture or large items. Please find a list of accepted items and fees here.

The Drop-Off Station is located at 2950 East Ellsworth Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48108

The Recovery Yard is another great local service that accepts a variety of materials and items for safe recycling and safe disposable.  Please find a list of accepted items and fees here.

The Recovery Yard is located at 7891 Jackson Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48103

Community Standards & Fees

Please ensure that personal items such as trash, furniture or other bulky items are not left in the yard or by the curb.

The City of Ann Arbor's Department of Community Standards will often ticket properties. If the property receives a ticket, then we may pass along the related fee to you. If we need to send maintenance to haul any furniture items, then we will also pass along that hauling expense to you. We appreciate your cooperation!
